Garbage service is changing December 1
Last updated: October 5, 2026
Waste Management (WM) will begin collecting garbage and recycling on Herriman's public streets on December 1, 2026, replacing Wasatch Front Waste and Recycling District (WFWRD). The change is intended to lower residents' monthly costs.
You'll keep your carts, and garbage and recycling will still be picked up every week. Most residents are expected to keep the same pickup day. Some details are still being finalized, and we'll update this page as we learn more.
Is my home included?
If your home is on a public street in Herriman, you're included in the change. This includes homes in homeowners associations (HOAs) on public streets.
An easy way to tell is to look at your street sign:
- Green street sign: public street. Residential garbage and recycling service is included in the change to WM.
- Blue street sign: private street. These homes are not included in this change. If your HOA currently uses WFWRD, it must arrange its own service. Check with your HOA to find out its plans.
We'll add an online map of affected homes as soon as possible after WFWRD transfers customer information.
This change covers residential service. It does not cover businesses.
Will my pickup day or carts change?
- Garbage and recycling will stay weekly.
- Most, if not all, customers are expected to keep their pickup day. WM will finalize routes and pickup days after receiving customer information from WFWRD. We'll post the final schedule here.
- Keep your existing carts. WM will add its branding to them. We'll share any instructions for making your carts available.
Continue following your WFWRD schedule through November 30. If you have a green-waste cart, see the green-waste section below for an important change.
What will I pay?
One garbage cart and one recycling cart will cost about $21.58 a month. That's $4.42 less per month than the current $26 cost.
Here's how monthly costs will change for two common setups. The WM prices below include a 3% City fee, which helps cover the City's landfill costs.
| Your carts | WFWRD now | WM starting December 1 | You save each month |
|---|---|---|---|
| One garbage cart and one recycling cart | $26.00 | $21.58 | $4.42 |
| Two garbage carts and one recycling cart | $45.50 | $33.94 | $11.56 |
Each garbage cart costs $12 per month, and each recycling cart costs $8.95 per month, before the 3% City fee. The fee will appear separately on your bill and is already included in the WM totals shown here.
What does that add up to over a year?
| Your service | WFWRD yearly cost | WM yearly cost | You save each year |
|---|---|---|---|
| One garbage cart and one recycling cart | $312.00 | $258.96 | $53.04 |
| Two garbage carts and one recycling cart | $546.00 | $407.28 | $138.72 |
| One garbage cart, one recycling cart, and a green cart kept for extra garbage under WM | $432.00 | $407.28 | $24.72 |
About the green-cart example: The WFWRD total includes $120 for a full season of green-waste collection. Under WM, that cart becomes an extra garbage cart collected year-round. Separate green-waste collection ends.
Yearly costs are estimates based on a full year at these rates. Extra fees, price changes, and rounding may affect your total.
What happens to my green-waste cart?
WM will not offer separate green-waste collection. If you have a green-waste cart, it will automatically become an extra garbage cart unless you choose to reduce your number of carts.
Keeping it will cost $12 per month for year-round garbage pickup. You can keep the extra cart or choose to have fewer carts. We'll post instructions for making that choice, any deadline, and what to do with a cart you no longer want.
WFWRD charges $12 per month for green-waste pickup during its season, normally March through December. WM's $12 base price is the same, but garbage pickup runs all year.
We'll also share the last WFWRD green-waste pickup dates for Herriman and, when available, information about other yard-waste disposal options.
How do I switch my billing to WM?
WM will mail you an account number. Use it to set up your new WM account and a payment method. Watch for WM's welcome letter in November with setup instructions and more about your service.
Here's what to expect for your bills:
- In December, you'll receive your final WFWRD bill. It covers November service and any unpaid balance. You still need to pay those charges after WM takes over.
- In January 2027, WM will send your first bill. It covers your December service. After that, WM will send bills on the 1st of each month. Your bill will show when payment is due.
Don't assume your automatic payments will transfer. We'll add instructions for setting up WM payments and handling existing WFWRD automatic payments when details are available (probably in mid-November). Account-setup links and deadlines are also still to come.
WM's welcome letter will be separate from the City's updates.
What should I do now?
- Keep using your carts and current WFWRD schedule through November 30. Check back for your final WM pickup day before December 1.
- Watch your mail for WM's November welcome letter and your account number. Follow the setup instructions when they arrive.
- Think about how many carts you need. If you don't want to keep your green cart as an extra garbage cart, watch for instructions on requesting fewer carts.
- If you live in an HOA on private streets that currently uses WFWRD, check with your HOA about its service plans.
