Prepare Your Home and Sprinkler System for Winter

As temperatures continue to drop, Herriman residents are encouraged to take a few simple steps to prepare their homes and irrigation systems for the colder months ahead. Freezing temperatures can cause water left in pipes and sprinkler systems to expand, potentially leading to cracked pipes, broken sprinkler components, and costly repairs.

One of the most important steps is to shut off and winterize your sprinkler system before freezing temperatures arrive. Sprinkler lines should be properly drained to prevent water from freezing inside them. Depending on the system, this may involve opening drain valves or having the lines professionally blown out. Residents should also disconnect and drain garden hoses, shut off outdoor faucets where applicable, and insulate exposed pipes in garages, crawl spaces, or other unheated areas.

As lawns and landscaping enter their dormant season, watering needs also decrease significantly. Cooler temperatures, shorter days, and reduced evaporation mean less water is needed to maintain healthy landscaping. Residents should adjust their watering schedules accordingly and discontinue outdoor irrigation as the season comes to an end.

Taking time to winterize now can help conserve water, protect your home’s plumbing and irrigation system, and prevent unnecessary repairs when warmer weather returns in the spring.
