Keep Streets Safe as Students Head Back to School

With a new school year beginning, drivers and pedestrians will once again be sharing busy streets and crossings around Herriman schools. Drivers should slow down in school zones, watch carefully for pedestrians, follow crossing guards, and be prepared to stop at crosswalks. Pedestrians can also help by using marked crosswalks, looking both ways, and making eye contact with drivers before entering the roadway.

Drivers should also know that not all crosswalks have the same requirements. At a school zone crosswalk, typically identified by zebra-style striping, drivers must wait until the pedestrian has crossed the entire roadway before proceeding. At a standard crosswalk, typically marked with parallel solid lines, drivers must wait until the pedestrian has crossed their side of the roadway before proceeding.

Whether you are driving to work, dropping students off at school, or walking through your neighborhood, a little extra attention can make a difference. Slow down, stay alert, and give everyone the time and space they need to safely get where they are going.
