West Nile Virus Awareness

Protect Yourself Against West Nile Virus This Summer
Mosquito season is in full swing, and health officials are encouraging residents to take simple precautions to reduce the risk of West Nile virus (WNV). This year, mosquito surveillance has detected the virus earlier than usual, and more mosquito samples have tested positive compared to the same time in recent years.
While most mosquitoes do not carry West Nile virus, there is no way to tell which ones may be infected. Residents can help protect themselves by using an EPA-registered mosquito repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors after dusk, and making sure window and door screens are in good condition. Around the home, draining standing water from items such as buckets, plant trays, pet dishes, and old tires can help reduce mosquito breeding. Keeping weeds and tall grass trimmed and maintaining garden ponds can also help limit mosquito activity.
Most people who become infected with West Nile virus experience mild or no symptoms, but older adults and those with weakened immune systems are at greater risk for severe illness. By taking a few simple precautions now, residents can enjoy the outdoors while helping reduce the spread of mosquitoes throughout the community. If you have concerns about mosquito breeding areas or would like additional prevention information, contact the South Salt Lake Valley Mosquito Abatement District for assistance.
