Accessory Vehicle Storage

As Herriman City continues to grow, its ordinances are evolving to improve neighborhood aesthetics, safety, and accessibility. Last fall, the City Council adopted an updated ordinance regarding the storage of Accessory Vehicles (AVs), including recreational vehicles (RVs), trailers, campers, and utility trailers. The changes, adopted through Ordinance 10-29-22, will take effect on October 10, 2025.

Key highlights of the ordinance:

  • Eligibility: AVs may only be stored on lots with an existing home or an established primary use.
  • Limits on the number of AVs: The maximum number of AVs stored will depend on the lot size—4 AVs on small lots, up to 10 on larger properties.
  • RVs for residential use: Living in RVs is prohibited. A temporary exception can be granted for home construction (with a City permit).
  • Storing extra AVs: To store more AVs than allowed, a conditional use permit is required, along with fencing, improved storage surfaces (concrete, asphalt, or gravel with a border), and setbacks from property lines.
  • Vehicle maintenance: All stored AVs must be operable and in good condition. Junk or inoperable vehicles are prohibited.
  • Driveway requirements: Any new or modified driveways for AV storage must be reviewed and approved by the City for proper surfacing.

Grace Period:

There is a grace period until the ordinance's effective date, meaning enforcement actions will not begin until October 10, 2025. This gives residents' time to make any necessary adjustments to bring your property into compliance.

What You Need to Do:

The City encourages you to evaluate your property now to ensure that your AV storage meets the new requirements. If adjustments are needed, you have until the ordinance goes into effect to make them.
