Police Resources and Information
A guide for victims of sexual assault
What to expect when filing a report
Initial reports of sexual assault can be done by phone at 801-840-4000 or in-person at the Herriman Police Department (5355 W Herriman Main St). During the initial contact, basic information will be gathered by a patrol officer including inquiries about the collection of possible forensic evidence. The police department will provide information to the reporting party regarding sexual assault examinations which shall be conducted by a qualified nurse, if applicable.
What happens next
The case will then be activated and routed to the Special Victims Unit and assigned to an investigator trained in victim centered interviewing techniques and sexual assault investigations. The assigned investigator will follow-up directly with the reporting party and arrange a time to conduct a more in-depth interview. A Herriman Police Department Victim Advocate is available to be present and assist at any stage of the reporting, interviewing, and/or investigative process. The reporting party may also choose to have an alternate support person present, if needed.
All victims, witnesses, suspects, and associated parties will be interviewed. Any forensic evidence will be analyzed and processed by the appropriate crime lab. After all information, statements, lab results, photographs, and other pertinent evidence has been compiled, the entire case will then be presented to members of the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s office for review and determination of judicial action.
