Obtain a State Sales Tax Number

Most businesses that sell goods, and some that provide services, are required to collect and remit sales tax. A sales tax number can be obtained through One Stop Business Registration when registering your business name.

Register as an Employer

If your business will have employees

Businesses with employees may need to register with several agencies and obtain the appropriate insurance:

Employer Identification Number (EIN)

Obtain an EIN from the Internal Revenue Service for federal tax withholding and FUTA payments.

State Withholding Number

Register with the Utah State Tax Commission to remit state taxes withheld from payroll.

State Unemployment Insurance

Employers are required to carry state unemployment insurance. Contact the Utah Department of Workforce Services for additional information.

Workers' Compensation Insurance

Workers' compensation insurance is required for employers and may be obtained through qualifying insurance providers.

If your profession is regulated by the State of Utah, such as contracting, cosmetology, real estate, mortgages, or certain medical professions, you will need to provide a copy of your state license when submitting your City business license application.
