Signs
If you are planning to install a monument sign or building sign (not including banners. Contact the Planning Department at 801-446-5323 for temporary sign permits), whether the sign will use electricity or not, a building permit is required. If installing more than one sign at the same project, only one permit is required.
Requirements for submitting a permit application for a sign
- Fill out the online Permit Application Form and attach all of the following items.
- Site Plan showing location of sign(s) and setback to property line for monument signs.
- Construction Plans including:
- Typically a color representation of the exterior of the building and where the sign(s) will be placed, including dimensions.
- Attachment and electrical plans with Utah State Licensed Structural Engineer’s wet stamp (see sample).
- For monument signs, construction details showing footing depth, rebar placement, etc. (see sample).
- Valuation, including costs for labor and materials to complete the project (can be a contract, bid sheet or invoice).
For monument signs, a conditional use application must be approved through the Planning Department prior to submitting a building permit (see application).
Permit fees for a sign building permit are based on the number of signs being installed and whether they are electrical or not. Please call our office for a fee estimate. (Typically, for one electrical sign attached to the exterior of a building the fee would be just over $200.)
Plan review may take approximately 10-15 business days, after which we may require corrections that need to be made to your plans. The permit will be issued after plans are approved and all fees are paid.
Signs must be inspected for safety and code compliance. See Required Inspections for details.
